The Probota Monastery was built in 1530 by Prince Petru Rareº and was strengthened with massive walls in 1646 by the Prince Vasile Lupu. Initially, it was part of a larger monastic complex that included a princely and a parochial residence. The church, that has St. Nicholas as its patron, has got a beautiful porch at the entrance and Gothic windows that contribute to its special elegance. The burial chamber contains the tombs of Petru Rareº, his wife and their son Ioan. Only few of the original paintings could be preserved, on the outer walls and on the apse. These include “The Prayer of All Saints” and the “Akathistos Hymn”.
